| Karami says corrupt
people will no longer be protected Prime Minister-designate Omar Karami underscored Thursday his cabinet's priorities saying it will curb the rampant corruption in government institutions and provide people's basic needs and services, As Safir reported Friday. "The corrupt will no longer be protected by political cover," Karami said. Speaking at an Iftar, the sunset fast-breaking meal during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, Karami said, "We will hit with an iron fist all corrupt elements everywhere they exist. I do not promise you much since all of you know the limited timetable of the government. However, I affirm that the cabinet will do whatever is needed to combat corruption in administrations and initiate a salvation operation that will restore the country's dignity and efficiency and help achieve the state of law and institutions," he added. Karami went on to say that his government will work hard to provide basic needs the people have been demanding including electricity, water, fuel, education and medication. "These are essential services that should be provided to reduce living pressure on the citizens," Karami said. "Our government is for all the Lebanese without exception and we will work for everyone away from discrimination and regardless of sects, religions, regions or political groups or gatherings," he said. Karami that his cabinet is similar to other democratic governments across the world, it accepts criticisms aimed for preserving national interests and welcomes any constructive and efficient opposition with respect to protecting the state and people's welfare. |
