| Israel arrests Islamic
Jihad activist after training in Syria, Lebanon JERUSALEM, Dec 12 (AFP) - A Palestinian who was recruited by Islamic Jihad in
Syria and trained by the radical organisation in Lebanon has been arrested by Israeli
security forces, military sources said Sunday.
Ahmed Jaber, 25, from the West Bank town of Ramallah, was recruited three years ago while
studying in the Syrian city of Aleppo by Jihad's number two Abu Ibrahim, the sources said.
He then travelled to Lebanon where he met another senior Jihad militant and underwent
weapons and explosives training.
He later returned to Syria where he continued his training before returning to the West
Bank.
Jaber was arrested two months ago but news of his detention was only made public Sunday
when an Israeli military court extended his remand in custody for another month.
Like the larger Palestinian radical group Hamas, the leadership of Jihad is split between
its stronghold in the Gaza Strip and in Damascus. |
