blames US, Israel for European Parliament resolution BEIRUT - Lebanon's Shiite Muslim movement Hezbollah said Friday the United States
and Israel were to blame for a European Parliament call for action against the group's
"terrorist" activities.
"Hezbollah is surprised by the position of the European Parliament (taken) under the
influence of outside pressure, mainly American and Israel, in total contradiction with EU
guiding principles of freedom and democracy," it said.
The parliament in a resolution on Thursday backed unspecified measures against Hezbollah,
referring to "clear evidence of (its) terrorist activities". But it did not put
Hezbollah on a European list of terrorist organisations.
The Iranian-backed movement, in a statement, said the warning could "only harm the
credibility of the European Parliament and the European countries with whom we have links
of friendship and respect".
The resolution also "harmed the Lebanese people which reaffirmed on Tuesday" at
a massive pro-Syrian rally in Beirut "their commitment to the resistance", said
Hezbollah which called the demonstration.
"It would have been wiser for the European Parliament to examine the crimes committed
by Israel against the Lebanese and Palestinian peoples," it said. |
